HISTORY OF MUAY THAI AND MUAY BORAN
Discover the Art & Science of Nine Limbs
Muay Thai is a combat sport that is known for its powerful strikes, clinching techniques, and devastating elbow strikes. Muay Boran, on the other hand, is an ancient martial art that focuses on techniques used in combat scenarios. Both martial arts have a long history in Thailand and are still practiced today. At LionHeart Muay Thai, we strive to teach our students about the history and tradition of these martial arts, as well as the techniques themselves.
HISTORY OF MUAY THAI ?
Thailand is famous for Muay Thai, or "Thai Boxing," which evolved from the ancient martial art Muay Boran, meaning "Ancient Fighting." Muay Boran, crucial for defending the Siamese kingdom, includes regional styles and weapon techniques called Krabi-Krabong.
During the Ayutthaya Kingdom period (13th-18th centuries), Muay Thai emerged by refining Muay Boran techniques and removing lethal moves. It became a practical fighting skill and a popular form of entertainment in royal courts and festivals.
Today, Muay Thai is recognized worldwide for its effectiveness and is widely practiced, especially in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions. Despite its modern evolution, Muay Thai remains deeply rooted in Thai culture, retaining its traditional ceremonies and values.
HISTORY OF MUAY BORAN
Muay Boran, meaning "Ancient Fighting," is the traditional martial art of Thailand and the predecessor to modern Muay Thai. It features a wide range of techniques, including strikes, grappling, joint locks, and the use of weapons like swords and spears in Krabi-Krabong.
Developed for both self-defense and warfare, Muay Boran was essential for soldiers and royal guards in protecting the Siamese kingdom. The king's personal guards were highly trained in this art to ensure the safety of the royal family.
Culturally, Muay Boran was performed at festivals and celebrations, showcasing Thai martial prowess. Over time, its techniques evolved, leading to the creation of Muay Thai by removing the more lethal aspects. Despite these changes, Muay Boran remains a vital part of Thailand's cultural heritage and is still practiced today.

Today, Muay Thai is recognised globally for its effectiveness and is practised by martial artists worldwide. Its emphasis on strikes using fists, elbows, knees, and shins, along with its rigorous training regimens, has made it a staple in mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions. Despite its evolution, Muay Thai remains deeply rooted in Thai culture, retaining its ceremonial aspects and traditional values.
